Snoring is one of the most common sleep disorders that can affect anyone, any age. Studies estimate that 45% of men and 30% of women snore on a regular basis. One common misconception about snoring is that “large” men are snorers. Yet a “larger” man has the same chance of snoring as a small, thin woman. However, snoring tends to worsen as people get older and as they gain weight.

When we are asleep, the area at the back of the throat sometimes narrows.

We still breathe in the same amount of air as we normally do, but now it is passing through this smaller opening and can cause the tissues surrounding the opening to vibrate, which in turn cause snoring. Different people who snore have different reasons for the narrowing. The narrowing can be in the nose, mouth, or throat. Snoring is common and even occurs in people who don’t regularly snore after a viral illness, taking some medications, or after drinking alcohol.

Snoring can also be a symptom of a more serious sleeping disorder such as sleep apnea.

Lifestyle changes such as losing weight, avoiding alcohol close to bedtime or sleeping on your side, can help stop snoring. Additionally, medical devices and surgery are options for more serious cases of snoring.
